Game of Thrones Season 6: Episodes 4 & 5

Hold on let me just wipe away these last few tears…ok here are my thoughts on the last two episodes of Game of Thrones…damn it Hodor…

1. These Episodes Made Me Realize How Far This Show Has Come:

I’ll start with the North…when Jon Snow was reading Ramseys’ letter from Winterfell it occurred to me…

A) That we were witnessing maybe the single safest room in all of Westeros which included Jon Snow, Jon Snow’s friend who’s name none of us remember, Lady Brienne of Tarth, and Sir Davos.

B) That all those people not named Jon Snow traveled a crazy long way to be in that room. Sansa, for example, traveled all the way from Winterfell to Kings Landing and back, having survived every sort of abuse under the sun along the way.

Episode 5 also brought some milestone moments from the Iron Islands. Theon went from being Robb Stark’s right hand, to betraying him, to rejoining his Iron born kingdom, to becoming the most brainwashed slave ever, and now to joining his sister in a revolt against their uncle….speaking of which…

2. I Actually Care About The Iron Island Stuff Now:

Yes it was interesting to watch what passes for democracy on the Iron Islands, and yes it was cool to watch the craziest royal initiation ever…but what really caught my attention was when Theon’s uncle said he’d use his fleet to gain leverage over Dany.

At first I laughed because I immediately imagined Dany’s dragons eating this clown. And then Yara and Theon stole the boats…Now I’m hoping that Yara’s fleet turns out to be the transportation Dany has been waiting for.

3. These Episodes Basically Confirm That Awesome Stuff Will Happen By Seasons End:

The moment Sansa asked Jon to take back Winterfell, I was like “nah he wouldn’t agree to something like that this early in the season.” I thought Jon would reply to Sansa with a casual…

“No Sansa, I just came back from the dead, I’m tired,” or “Sansa you know what let me think about that because White Walkers exist, oh yeah and by the way I just woke up from the dead…”

… Instead Jon responds by asking Tormund how many Wildlings he has to fight with…and that’s why I love this show. Nothing would make me happier than to see ‘The Battle of the Bastards,’ that is, Jon Snow defeating Ramsey to become the Lord of Winterfell. Then episode 5 kicked it up a notch by showing us the first planning session for what will be a greatest war campaign in the North…

Then there’s all that stuff back at Kings Landing…

Just when you thought all that belittling “queen regent” stuff was getting to Cersei’s head…she got her mojo back. When her and Jaime suggested that the Tyrell army (which Jaime described as “the second largest army” in Westeros no less) invade the city, it became immediately apparent where the shows budget was going this season. With a beat down between Jon and Ramsey up North and a battle at Kings landing, I think we can expect that this season will make up for skipping over Robb Starks battles…

4. Dany Continues To Win At Life And That Will Never Annoy Me:

Episode 4 and 5 reminded me that Daenerys is still a total badass (even without her dragons). In a single episode she destroyed what I can only imagine was a long standing Dothraki widow tradition. Not only that, but she managed to rally the entire horde behind her.

I should probably be annoyed with how easily she bounced back, but I’m not… and if things weren’t perfect enough, she even forgave Jorah and commissioned him to find the cure for his rash…

5. Arya’s Assassin Training Has Taken Way Too Long, And That Does Annoy Me:

When Joqen H’ghar told Arya that she wouldn’t get a third chance to be a faceless person, I actually clapped… because I don’t know that I could take sitting through this chance let alone a third. I feel like most of Ary’s appearances on this show are just shots of her getting beat down by that annoying training partner, which has gotten old. This training better be worth it…she’s better assassinate the Night King or something because otherwise I’ll want my money back.

6. Hodor Is The Shows Greatest Hero And Deserves A Presidential Medal Of Freedom:

Looks like I have to return that Hodor shirt I bought at Spencers because there’s no way I’ll ever make fun of his name ever again. The man is a saint, not just because he saved Bran, but because he did so against a horde of zombies. Even characters on The Walking Dead haven’t done anything this great. Learning that Hodor’s name (and sadly his life) is drawn from the moment of his death is the most heartbreaking thing this show’s delivered in a while. Bran’s visitations into the past are responsible for this and now he has to work extra hard to make me not hate him. What was he doing there anyways? The three eyed raven told him that the Night King was on his way, so why stick around?

Goodbye Hodor, you will be remembered as possibly the most selfless person on this show…

What did you think of these episodes? You still crying over Hodor? It’s ok I am too…
