Better Call Saul: Season 2 Finale…Something Was Missing

Share This:

This was a great episode, but not a great finale. This felt more like that great episode that helps to set up a great finale. I think a lot of it had to do with how unresolved everything felt on both Mike and Jimmy’s ends…

First The Minor Points…

1. That Super Long Hospital Take At The Beginning Was Terrifying And Easily One Of The Season’s Best Moments:

It wasn’t hard to see how much pain Chuck was in, but this scene told me something else… this show has really succeeded in getting the audience to understand Chuck’s condition. Hell, I almost felt like I was enduring those lights…

2. That Arms Dealer Is The Most Stand Up Guy In The World:

This isn’t that big of a point, but it’s worth mentioning how great this guy is…because after all…

He’s there when you need him…he goes practice shooting with you…and he gives you free ammo? What a champ…

On to the more important stuff…

3. The Tape Recorder And Jimmy’s Sibling Rivalry:

Jimmy had this one coming, and I’m actually proud of Chuck for thinking of such a damn good plan…but again, I wish this season had one more episode in it so we could see Chuck confront Jimmy with his evidence/ and or resolve their dispute…why?

  1. because that would’ve made for a better finale
  2. because we’ve already seen enough of the Jimmy/ Chuck rivalry at this point. I’m not sure how much I’m going to wanna watch this friction fade into the next season.
  3. because it means Jimmy will have less time to spend with Mike

This season has made it very clear that Chuck and Jimmy resent each other…I’m hoping season 3 doesn’t continue to remind us of that…

4. Who Left The Note On Mike’s Car?:

I’m honestly disappointed that Mike’s season ended like this. Since he’s been stalking the Salamanca operation for episode after episode, you’d think it would amount to more than this. I thought he’d take the shot, hit Hector, and cause some brain damage or something…oh well…

And the note? Well it wasn’t the guy who sold Mike the gun and it wasn’t me…so who left it? Really only two people…One is Gus Fring and the other is a character we haven’t met yet…

Who are we kidding, it was Gus…

5. This Finale Needed Gus Plain And Simple:

gus-fring-breaking-bad

Throwing Gus into the finale (even for a second) would’ve marked the perfect turning point in a show that doesn’t have much more to tell us with the pieces in play…

…Sure Jimmy is finding more success as a solo lawyer, but he’s still fighting the same old battles with Chuck and his ‘morally flexible’ nature. Mike isn’t really doing anything except looking for trouble when he doesn’t necessary have to (Even Nacho told Mike that Hector Salamanca had effectively forgotten about him…hearing that didn’t inspire a whole lot of urgent excitement)…

This is why a Gus appearance would’ve meant so much…and this season totally earned it. It felt like season 2 was really building towards something worthy of Gus, it’s just a shame it didn’t reward us with it…

What did you think of season 2 and it’s finale?
